Chris Beighley

Chris Beighley — Fergus Falls, MN

Chris is the brother of fellow carver, Dave Beighley. Although both men were inspired and taught to carve by their father, "The Old Guy" David H Beighley, their styles vary dramatically. Chris carved his first fish back in 1973. He laments back to when he began carving saying he used to cut fins out of anything he could get his hands on. At first his decoys were simple and basic. Now over the years, Chris' decoys have grown to elaborate pieces of art. His iconic "Psycho" line of fish are highly sought after. With wild designs and technical paint schemes they are a sight to see.

Dave Beighley

Dave Beighley — Erhard, MN

Dave grew up on the shores of Wall lake and began carving decoys, in his words, "Out of necessity." Dave is a third generation carver to which he credits his father, NFDA legend T.O.G. "The Old Guy" David H. Beighley for getting him and his brother Chris into carving fish. Dave began competing at the Perham Gathering Decoy Show in the early 2000's. Immediately he had Major success winning countless awards throughout multiple disciplines including airbrush categories, hand paint categories, open paint, jig stick categories and many many more!

Brian Davis — Edgerton, WI

Brian began carving in highschool(2000) but didn’t get serious until 2008. His inspirations come from his fathers (Doug) style along with spearing experience and folk art interests.

Biggest influences include his father, Harley Ragan, Bob Johnson, Mike Holmes, Kirk Schnitker, Evan Kolstad, Tim Spreck, Dennis Bertrum, Larry Lange, and all past and present carvers/spearers that keep the sport alive. Spearing in Michigan with Harley and Holmes is what started it all and will never be forgotten!

Brian enjoys getting to spear for pike in Minnesota or Michigan and the challenges of competition at The Gathering in Perham Minnesota.

Ryan Ebert

Ryan Ebert — Fort Atkinson, WI

Ryan is a self employed graphic design, photographer and marketing guru from Fort Atkinson, WI. Ryan has been involved in various forms of art his whole life. Having earned his degree in Graphic Design and spent eleven years as an Art Director for an agriculture publishing company. So it was a natural fit for him to take to the art of carving decoys in 2012. His interest for carving stemmed from spearing over decoys on remote lakes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with his friend and fellow carver, Mike Kitt and his son, Josh. Ryan has been mostly self taught in the art of decoy carving. This has attributed to him developing a unique style that is all his own, often adding things like deer antlers to his fish. Ryan's work has really taken hold in the sturgeon spearing world over the last several years. Fun fact: The State of Wisconsin sells 13,000 Sturgeon spearing licenses a year. Ryan attests that the excitement for the opening day of spearing for Sturgeon is as much or greater than deer season! Ryan also speared his personal best pike over one of his own decoys, measuring in at 40.25 inches! In Feb. 2020 during the Wisconsin sturgeon spearing season he speared an almost 60”, 55lb lake sturgeon that came in to one of his folk art decoys. Ryan has also won multiple ribbons and categories at the Gathering in Perham!
His work has been featured on MeatEater’s BENT podcast, The Wisconsin Sportsman podcast, and Friday Night Pikes.

Ryan Gast

Ryan Gast — Erskine, MN

Ryan hails from Erskine Minnesota and has been carving decoys since 2000. Ryan sites some of his early influences as carvers Dennis Bertram and Tim Nathe. Ryan has pioneered his own style of decoys that combine both realistic and folk art attributes. This makes his decoys not only highly unique but also highly sought after. His favorite types of fish to carve are a tossup between Northern's and Walleyes. Ryan had an awesome documentary done revolving around his love for spearing and decoy carving. The documentary titled "Anchored" was beautifully shot and also tells a moving story of Ryan's father and his battle with cancer and how that lead Ryan to his passion for spearing and fish decoys. With the release of the movie Ryan has gotten to do seminars, community education, and outreach for the decoy community. This, in Ryan's words, has been his biggest accomplishment!

John Jensen

(1929-2003)

JJcarvin.jpg

John Jensen (1929-2003) — Fargo, N.D.

John began carving in 1938 at the age of 9 years old. In the beginning he only carved animals, then from 1950 to 1957 he began making a few fish decoys. In 1983 he was actively carving fish decoys again after a few years off.

All of John's fish decoys were hand carved with a knife and all are hand brush painted, primarily using oils. He is one of the few remaining carvers still using these traditional techniques. John made more than 700 fish decoys during his career, averaging about 35 decoys per year. At the time of his death, there was more than a 4 year waiting list for John's fish decoys. This waiting list has affected the value of his existing fish decoys.

John was a humble, quiet, kind and thoughtful man. He never talked about his achievements. He was an artist, a fish decoy carver and a teacher. Indeed, he needed some convincing to make his NFDA carver web site. Even then he only listed some of his awards and accomplishments. Many more remain unlisted, now probably forgotten forever.

It is worth highlighting some of his Major Awards, Memberships and Accomplishments here since the very size of the list in the following section, blurs the individual items.

Bob Johnson

Bob Johnson — Baxter, MN (1961-2017)

Bob was inspired to carve and spear at an early age by his father, a local legend during his time and an avid outdoorsman.  The fish decoys his father carved  were used as a necessity to harvest fish. Although Bob lost his father before he was a teen he continued to carve decoys and practice the spearing techniques he learned from his mentor.
His strong beliefs in spearing have kept him active in promoting decoy carving and lobbying to keep the sport and spirit of darkhouse spearing alive.  He was an active member of the Brainerd Chapter of the Minnesota Darkhouse & Angling Association as well as a supporter of the NFDA. He had also, as an instructor, initiated carving classes in the Brainerd High School.  Because of the successful participation of the students, many other schools in Minnesota have followed his steps in offering decoy carving classes. Bob was also a promoter and participant in the annual "Whitefish Open" which is a competition spearing contest between decoy carvers held each January.
Bob's artistic talents did not go unrecognized. He won well over 200 1st place titles in National and World competitions for carving. He has been featured in magazines, documentaries, and newspapers across the country. He was the NFDA World Points Champion in 2004. His talents went beyond carving. The summer of 2007, Bob spent many hours experimenting with pottery. He was also a photographer not to mention his drawings/paintings which include several of the "The Gathering" prints.
